“What about socialising though?”

This is one of the most common questions you can face as a home educator.

My son did not socialise at school.

He had friends, but they barely got any opportunity to talk to each other in lessons.

Break times were too difficult for him, so he spent them in the SEN building, away from most of the other students.

Now that he’s home educated, he’s more sociable than ever.

We’ve met other home ed families, and he’s reconnected with some of the friends he drifted away from at school.

He’s no longer a shy, quiet boy, but a chatty, interesting, confident teenager who is as happy talking to adults as he is kids. Far happier than I ever was talking to adults as a teenager, too!

What’s been your experience of socialising in home education compared to mainstream school?
