Do you find it hard to talk about your problems, even though you know you’d benefit from doing so?
In counselling, your counsellor needs to know your story. They need to understand what’s happened in the past and what’s going on for you right now, so they can help you to understand it better.
In coaching, your coach has been trained not to “Coach the story.” We don’t need to know the ins and outs of it. We just need to help you work out where you want to go and how you’re going to get there.
Some of my clients’ biggest “a-ha!” moments have been when they say, “I know exactly what I need to do!” They write it down for themselves and I might never know what that thing was.
Sometimes coaching might just be the coach asking you questions and you reflecting on them during and after the session without telling your coach any of your answers at all.
Coaching is all about YOU.
I don’t necessarily need to know your answers and ideas if I can see that my questions are helping you move forward.
So if the thought of talking through all your problems in counselling feels a bit much, coaching might just be the answer to help you move forward without dwelling on the past.
