In the “recovery community” you’ll hear the phrase “one day at a time” a lot.

And sure, when you’re working towards a big, towering goal that stretches you way outside of your comfort zone, one step or one day at a time makes it feel a whole lot more manageable and less overwhelming.

When you’ve had a really tough day and your instinct is to reach for a glass of wine to help you relax, the thought of never drinking again can feel impossible. Making that decision just for today is all you can manage.

But going one day at a time can feel like an endless difficult tunnel with no respite.

Keeping an eye on the positive result you’re aiming for is like turning on the light at the end of the tunnel.

Get really clear on the reasons you want to change your drinking habits, the things that you want to gain from sobriety rather than what you want to lose from alcohol, and keep them in mind on the hard days.

Maybe for you that’s losing some weight, having clearer skin, feeling more self-assured, improving your relationship, being a better parent, or having the energy to go all in on your business.

There are so many bright lights at the end of this tunnel!

Remember, sobriety is the journey, not the destination.

What does your destination look like?
